What is D1?

If you are reading this, you either have no idea what District 1 (or D1) is, or you think you know what it is but it isn’t clear. Most may think that D1 is an executive board composed of representatives from its member schools, which plans intercollegiate events throughout the academic year. This to some extent would be true, except it does not truly represent the entity that is D1. So perhaps a more appropriate question to ask (as opposed to what) would instead be: who is District 1?

The answer is simple: D1 is us. We are D1. Comprised of student members of Filipino student organizations of various colleges and universities that span New England (Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Brown University, Clarke University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Tufts University, and Wellesley College), D1 promotes awareness and discussion of Filipino culture and strengthens unity among students and the community.

The D1 Executive Board, elected annually, is comprised of representatives from the various colleges and universities, and serves as a resource and a networking facilitator for the student body of D1. The D1 Executive Board works closely with the member schools to plan several events throughout the academic year, such as the district’s annual culture show Kamayan, D1 Sosyal, and trips to national dialogues and conferences.

The Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue, Inc. (FIND, Inc.) would like to extend an invitation to the community to attend the 2009 Spring Conference hosted at Drexel University the weekend of March 27-29.

The theme of this conference is Filipino pride and is entitled, May Yabang, Hindi Mayabang which roughly translates to “With pride, Not arrogance”. The goal of Conference is to provide the delegates with historical information of how Filipino pride today stems from the accomplishments of Filipinos of the past, to enable delegates to connect with Filipinos who have made great achievements in their respective endeavors and inspire delegates to have a positive feeling of Filipino pride, and to call on delegates to self reflect and use their pride to better themselves and their communities. By providing this new understanding of Filipino pride and achievements, delegates will be able to serve as models for a positive outlook and a search for excellence within the Filipino community and beyond.

FIND, Inc. was founded April 11, 1992. The purpose of the organization is to promote unity and cooperation amongst Filipino and Filipino Americans along the East Coast through their universities, colleges, vocational and technical schools. District V, or better known as “D5,” encompasses the Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Southern New Jersey area.

Hey District One. How are you all? Although there are 2-3 months left in the semester (or trimester, quarter, or whatever system), District One E-Boardizzle is prepared to update you on what’s been happening since last semester and what’s happening this semester. Soooooo, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

1. Farewell to Manders (NU 2009) and Maria (Wellesley 2010)

Two positions have changed for D1’s E-Board. Amanda Correa, one of our co-chairs, and Maria Bisquera, one of our national directors, have resigned their respective positions as of last month. The District One executive board would like to thank them for all their efforts making last semester and Kamayan a blast and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Hearts Forever!

2. Say Hello to Javie (BU 2012), not ja-ve…

Our new national director for District One is Javier Onglao. Due to the limited time of picking Maria’s replacement, D1 E-Board voted in Javie as the new national director in a closed vote. Nonetheless, the District One executive board would like to welcome Javie into our family. Love ya D1 bro!

3. Get BIGGER D1! TFC in the hizzleee!

The District One executive board would like to welcome the University of Massachusetts Boston as our newest D1 member school. The Filipino Club (Yes, that’s their name) was co-founded by Hanah Fadrigalan and Marc Lujares. D1 member schools, please open your arms and integrate them into the District. Show some D1 Love!

4. FIND Spring Conference in the City of Brotherly Love, Philly!!!

District One is one of the seven districts of FIND, Inc., the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue Inc. FIND, Inc. 2009 Spring Conference will take place at Drexel University from March 27-29. Join students from all districts to learn about Filipino heritage and pride. 7. We bring the STANK on Cultural Shows

Several schools of District One will have each of their own cultural shows to express Filipino culture. NU Barkada will be having their first cultural show, Bahay Kubo, on Friday, March 21 at Northeastern University. BUFSA will have their annual cultural show on Saturday, April 18 at Boston University. Expect more cultural shows from other D1 schools.

Dialogue 2008: Magsalita

Dialogue “Magsalita” is Nov. 14-16 and D1 is going to be rolling deep.

We have a Facebook event to help organize D1’s accommodations and transport to Dialogue. Its called “D1 goes to Dialogue.” All the pertinent information is below as well.

Two options:
1- D1 Sponsored, We will be renting 2--15 passenger vans to take people from Boston to the hotel and Rutgers, Livingston Campus. We have room to take the first 25 people who respond to Rutgers.

Cost with accommodations $61

2 - On your own. We will organize groups of people to take the bus (Boltbus, Megabus, Greyhound) to NY Port Authority and either walk or take the metro to NY Penn Station. You can then take the train to Edison station along the Northeast Corridor on the NJ Transit Authority. We will have shuttle vans to take you from the train station to the hotel and to Rutgers Saturday morning.

Approx. cost with accomodations $80

3. Drive yourself and friends. Please let us know if you decide to take this option, so we can make sure you get safely to NJ.

**If we have more interest in taking a passenger van, we will need groups of 15 people with 1 of those people, 21 or over, to drive people.

Accommodations:

D1 has 12 rooms at the Holiday Inn. The secondary hotel which is next door to Best Western (primary hotel). The rate we have them for is $89 a night, but with a stay on Friday, Saturday + tax, the cost will be $204.70. Each room has 1 king bed and a sleeper sofa with memory foam; it is non-smoking. We plan on sleeping 8-10 people per room, to cut costs. If you would prefer a different arrangement, let us know.

Umawit Sa Kagalakan (Sing With Joy)

Celebrated Philippine choir, Ateneo Chamber Singers, will be coming to Boston this Fall. On the heels of their recent first-prize victory at the prestigious International Choral Contest in Tolosa, Spain, the choir brings their unique brand of Filipino choral artistry to Boston audiences. The diverse and eclectic concert program will include works by Stroope, Hogan, Miskinis as well as Filipino composers Francisco Feliciano, Ryan Cayabyab and Joel Navarro. They will also be performing choral renditions of inspirational songs by Twila Paris, Josh Groban and other contemporary artists. Concert proceeds will be donated to Gawad Kalinga.

Gawad Kalinga Walk

On Saturday, September 6th, make a difference with every step.

Gawad Kalinga (GK) Walk is our way of expanding the USA GK Hero’s Run which has been very successful in the last 3 years in gathering and generating many advocates and partners for GK. The heroic efforts of the GK marathoners have shown that the distance does not stop us from giving care. As a result of the GK Hero’s Run efforts since 2005, more than 9 GK villages have risen. Many other USA villages are being helped by the marathoners.

This event will take place simultaneously in 7 cities in Canada (Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton), and hopefully in over 40 cities in the USA.

The Massachusetts GK 5K (3.1m) walk will take place along the scenic Memorial Drive, Cambridge and Storrow Drive, Boston on September 6th, Saturday. Assembly time is 8:30 a.m.

The goal, through this event is to acquire enough money to build a house the poor in the Philippines. Through the selfless efforts of ANCOP and Gawad Kalinga the people of the Philippines now have hope that one day they will rise above the status of a third world country.

Philippines' Arroyo Says First Olympic Gold "Priceless"

MANILA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Although the government and the private sector in the Philippines have hiked cash incentive for the country's first Olympic gold to a stunning high, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday said the Olympic gold any Filipino athlete would bring home is priceless and goes far beyond the value of any reward.

"The main incentive is the athletes' determination and desire to be successful for themselves and for the country. That is the most important incentive," Arroyo said. "No amount of incentive could substitute the pride the gold-winning athlete would get for himself or herself and for the Filipino people."

In an exclusive interview with Manila-based Chinese reporters in Malacanang, the presidential palace, Arroyo said while it is true that the Philippines has yet won a gold in Olympics, as far as she is concerned the 15 athletes are already winners even before their first event in Beijing.

The Southeast Asian country is sending a squad of 15 athletes to Beijing this month to compete in boxing, taekwondo, shooting, archery, diving, swimming, athletics and weight-lifting. Boxer Harry Tanamor and taekwondist Mary Antoinette Rivero are considered the archipelago's best chances to bag a medal, if not a gold.

So far, the government, companies, business tycoons and various groups have pledged a combined sum of 15 million pesos (340,909 U.S. dollars) for any Beijing-bound Filipino athlete who gets a gold medal. According to Chinese media reports, the Philippine gold incentive for the Beijing Olympics ranked in the top five among countries that are going to offer cash rewards for an Olympic gold.

The Philippines has not yet won an Olympic gold during its participation in the Games since 1924. The most recent medal was a silver in boxing in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Arroyo said no matter what will be the outcomes the Philippine athletes going to China are already "champions in the hearts and minds of all Filipino people."

"Obviously, they are the role models for our next generations. We are proud of them," Arroyo said.

By attending the opening of the Olympics as the first Philippine president in history to do so, she would like to be there to cheer the athletes up and to just let them know that they do represent the country well, she said.

"And besides, Filipinos love sports," the energetic-looking president in her 60s said she still does many sports including golfing and diving. While she is a boxing fan as virtually every other Filipino, Arroyo said she would like to watch on television all the sports the Philippine athletes compete in order to give them encouragement.

Filipina poet and activist, Joi Barrios, will be making an appearance and giving a presentation at Northeastern University tomorrow at 7 pm! The event is titled Unmasking Power and it is hosted by our friends of District One.

She will be selling CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES as a fundraiser for the medical and legal defense funds of BAYAN (Bagong Alyansang Makabayan) and KMU (Kilusang Mayo Uno or May First Movement).

You guys will have the opportunity to look at key players and events with a critical eye. The talk then addresses the inevitable question: "How can Filipino American students participate in issues like globalization, war, and human rights?" American Idol is always so much better when there's a Filipino-American that we can all root. Remember the season with Jasmine Trias and Camile Velasco?.. best season ever! Well, this year we can experience the same excitement. Let's support this Filipino-American artist. In the US. Filipinos rarely get a chance to shine in the Hollywood spotlight so let's make sure she gets far so she can rep for us Filipinos. Remember to vote, vote, vote if you can. This weekend, the 6th Annual New England Dance Collaboration (NEDC) show took place at BU'S George Sherman Union and featured the BU's premier hip hop dance troupe FUSION, BU's VIBES, and NU's KINEMATIX. As many of you know these 3 dance troupes feature members of BUFSA and NU Barkada. All involved did an excellent job and from what I heard these 3 groupes did really well. CONGRATS =)

This Thursday, NU Barkada will be hosting the MAHALo-halo Valentines Day General Meeting! Before you take out the love of your life to dinner, take them to MAHALO-halo i'm sure they will be very impressed. Details are at the bottom of the page!

Omggggg. I just came across this video of BUFSA's Krystal Balagot lipsynching to "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" from her sweet 16! LOL. Barrel Man loves you Krystal.

My favorite part is the scene where she's in the open field spinning, with her arms outstretched, while lipsynching her heart out to the song. aw! hahaha

Jolie Turns Down Visit to the Philippines

Today, the Philippine Star is reporting that actress and UN Ambassador , Angelina Jolie, turned down an invitation by militant Kilusang Magbubukid to visit poverty stricken refugees that were displaced by military operations in the PI. By inviting Jolie, they hoped to bring worldwide awareness to the troubling situation. Jolie's agent, Geyer Kosinski, responded to the invitation by simply stating that she was not available the time. Carl Ala, a KMP information officer, will continue to send invitations out to Jolie in hopes that she will eventually join the effort.

here's an excerpt from the article detailing the troubling situation in the Philippines:

"Citing the report of human rights group Karapatan in Southern Tagalog, Ramos said that in Quezon province alone, more than 9,000 children have been displaced from their homes. Ramos claimed they were forced to evacuate because of the military abuses that include threats, harassment and torture. The military had allegedly summoned the parents of the children three times a month reportedly for interrogation and torture"

Pinoy Palooza was Amazing!

Last night I had the opportunity to check out BUFSA's Pinoy Palooza at BU Central and it was SUCH an amazing show. The show started with a performance by the beautful and talented, Alfa Garcia who performed many new songs as well as some of her old songs as well. Alfa was kind enough to dedicate her song "Home to Me" to Marissa Cuevas who was having a rough week. Alfa provided witty transitions between each song and performed with an inspiring confidence. Following Alfa's performance was an awesome performance by Matt Sia. One of my favorite performances of the night, was the peformance by Danny Katz who started his set with a very entertaining medley of 80's/early 90's cartoon theme songs such as the Ducktales theme song and the Smirfs theme song. Following Dan Katz was a performance by Jay Legaspi, who nervously introduced himself to the crowd of 60-70 people. Jay was wonderful as always and sang his usual songs such as the crowd favorite "T-Shirt and Sweats". The night ended with a perfomance by BUFSA's own Matthew Pereyra who breezed through his set. He seemed pretty nervous as well and forgot the lyrics to a few of his songs.. but he did an awesome job nonetheless.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Matthew Pereyra after the concert to ask him about his performance. He told me that he had a good time performing on stage and that he felt that his performance was "sweeet'. i love u matty.

BUFSA Goes Ice Skating!

BUFSA's Danelle Cometa and Krystal Balagot were spotted at FSA's Ice Skating Event on January 20th at Agganis Arena in Boston University.

my sources at the event tell me that Alex Razon, Recreations Coordinator of FSA, couldn't balance on his skates and had to be helped around the rink the WHOLE TIME by Danelle and Krystal HAHAH. good job A-Raz!

Vanessa Hudgens Talks About Being Filipino

it's so rare nowadays to find Filipino Americans in the Entertainment industry. and those who actually make it.. don't usually acknowledge their nationality. It's so good to see young Filipino-American artists on the rise. Here's an excerpt from an interview Vanessa had with the popular Filipino newspaper, the Inquirer:

Can you share your thoughts about your Filipino heritage?
I am so proud of my heritage. I love being a Filipina. There aren’t very many Filipino girls in the industry. So being able to stand up and be that girl makes me proud. My mother is so proud. She grew up in Manila. I don’t even think she knows it’s doing that well over there. I’d love to make it over there sometime. Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to visit.

Do you speak Tagalog?
Oh, not really. My mom tried to teach me when I was younger. I am not that great at languages. I really want to learn, though.

When do you think you will visit the Philippines?
I think whenever I have a good second to do nothing and just go where I want. I have been talking about it forever and it never materializes. Hopefully, soon. I can’t wait to see the Philippines.

What did your mom tell you about the Philippines? And in what ways are you Filipino?
She told me several stories about where she used to live. She has 11 brothers and sisters so she had a big family. I love Filipino food. I love halo-halo, pancit and adobo. I am such a Filipino—I eat rice every day (laughter).

Kamayan 2007 Featured in Northeastern News

I recently came across a wonderful article online about Kamayan 2007 that was written back in November, a few days after the show. It features qoutes from our favorite friends from NU Barkada. Here's an excerpt from that article:

"After months of preparation, Kamayan was very rewarding, said Mia Roque, a sophomore business major and another dance coordinator for NU Barkada. "I was in tears before we went on, because we've spent so much time together preparing this," she said. "A lot of people came out who didn't know about us. You can tell that the community at Northeastern is very strong."

Students at the event said they enjoyed the combination of entertainment."I thought that was really cool," said Rachel White, a junior sociology major. "I liked all the dancing, but I also thought that the [D1TV] videos fit very well."

Kamayan 2007.. oh, the memories. DTV Kamayan 2007 was definitly an amazing experience for all involved. if you're still interested in buying one of those awesome DTV shirts, I'm hearing that they're still available.. just see a D1 E-board member!
